California's major reservoirs currently hold about 129 percent of historical water levels despite years of drought, thanks to recent storms.

The levels of reservoirs like Pine Flat, Millerton, and San Luis are all above average, providing flexibility for water managers and reducing the risk of shortages.

However, even with strong reservoir numbers, the state is still experiencing the effects of an extreme drought.

Snowpack levels in the Sierra Nevada are mixed, with the Northern Sierra only at 68 percent of average, while the Southern Sierra is at 114 percent.

Reservoir releases are necessary due to flood control rules.
